Patients who have been diagnosed with diabetes have to take care of themselves in some additional ways including diet, monitoring of blood sugar levels, as well as vision care. The Clavenna Vision Institute understands the needs of patients with diabetes and meets and exceeds the expectations for the care of those patients.

Regular eye exams help detect changes in the eyes before vision can become damaged due to diabetes.

Every diabetic needs to have their eyes checked for diabetic retinopathy* at least once a year.

*Diabetic retinopathy is one of the most common preventable causes of vision loss. The key word here is preventable. We can detect early diabetic changes in the eyes long before the vision is threatened. Treatment, which usually involves laser, stops the progression and saves the vision in the vast majority of cases. Most diabetic eye exams involve just an examination but occasionally special testing is needed.

What are the Symptoms of Diabetic Retinopathy?

Symptoms of diabetic retinopathy include sudden changes in vision, blurred vision, constant eye pain and eye floaters. These symptoms can occur during the early stages of diabetic retinopathy. If you have been experiencing these symptoms it’s recommended that you see one of our eye doctors as soon as possible.

Is Diabetic Retinopathy Reversible?

Unfortunately diabetic retinopathy is not reversible, which is why our diabetic eye experts urge patients to seek immediate treatment if they are experiencing any of the symptoms. If a patient has only experienced minor vision loss thus far then it may be possible to prevent any further loss of vision through special treatments.

Could I be at Risk for Diabetic Retinopathy?

Patients who are faced with diabetes are at risk. Patients who have a longer history of diabetes are at a greater risk than those who have recently developed it.
