What is Glaucoma?
Glaucoma is a disease of the optic nerve which carries sight from the eye to the brain.
Glaucoma* is the second most common cause of blindness in the United States. It has been referred to as the “silent thief of sight” since it has no symptoms until it is too late.
Glaucoma can affect anyone at any age. If you have a family history of glaucoma you are at an even higher risk than most people. A comprehensive eye exam is required to detect glaucoma.
Can Glaucoma be Cured?
Glaucoma cannot be cured but treatment will slow or prevent vision loss. Since glaucoma is a very treatable disease, blindness would be rare if everyone had regular eye exams.
How Can Glaucoma be Treated?
Treatment usually involves eye drops, but laser surgery is sometimes needed. Patients who are experiencing the later stages of glaucoma must immediately seek treatment to help prevent vision loss. We urge patients in the Detroit area to schedule a consultation with our eye experts if they believe they are experiencing any of the noticeable symptoms.
*It may be associated with a high eye pressure, but not always. At the beginning of the disease there are no symptoms. As it progresses we slowly start to lose our peripheral vision. Since we are not aware of our peripheral vision until most of it is gone we don’t notice it until we are almost blind.
